GLD Enterprises Whip Artistry Studio sponsors Ohio Western arts convention

November 18, 2006 - Dayton Daily News "INSIGHT 2007" -- Jamestown, Ohio - The Dayton area is home to all kinds of performing arts, but one highly specialized group of performing artists has gone relatively unnoticed. The Wild West Performing Arts Foundation, or “Wild West Arts Club” (WWAC), is an international organization of performers and hobbyists who study Wild West arena arts.

Wild West arena arts include skills like lariat artistry, also known as ‘trick and fancy roping,’ precision knife and tomahawk throwing, gun spinning, and precision whip artistry, or ‘whip cracking.’ The WWAC international convention is held in Claremore, Oklahoma, hometown of 1930s actor and lariat artist, Will Rogers. There are several regional events across the country as well.

The Wild West Arts Club was founded in 1989 and later established as a non-profit organization under the National Heritage Foundation to promote and perpetuate skills that were a staple of American entertainment from the late 1800’s through the early 1960’s.

One of the WWAC founders, Alex Green, is a professional stuntman and whip coach who has worked in hundreds of movies and television productions. Green was the whip coach for “The Mask of Zorro,” and “Catwoman,” and stunt double for well-known actors like Sir Anthony Hopkins.

The Ohio WWAC regional group is based in Jamestown. Local members perform and teach throughout the year at area schools, libraries, and events. The Ohio regional convention is held in July during the Darke County festival honoring sharp shooting legend Phoebe Ann Oakley Mozee, better known as “Annie Oakley.” Oakley was born in Greenville, Ohio and spent most of her adult life performing in Wild West shows.

The ‘Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase & Ohio Regional WWAC Convention,’ attracts knife throwers, lariat artists, and whip artists from all over the country. Participants attend workshops and contests and present two public shows. The event is now in its fifth year and is operated by three professional Western artists from here in the Miami Valley.

Doug Smith, of Medway, Ohio, is an award-winning lariat artist, performer, and instructor. Kirk Bass, of Xenia, is a certified thrown weapons instructor and competitor. Bass’s presentations include authentic Native American regalia to honor his family’s Cherokee heritage. Bass says, “Where else could you learn from people who have worked with Halle Berry and Antonio Bandares?”

Gery Deer, of Jamestown, is a professional whip artist and coach whose work has been featured on film and television. His company, GLD Enterprises & Productions, and its subsidiary, the GLD Enterprises Whip Artistry Studio donates its resources to the Ohio WWAC events. Deer says, “These professional performers are an invaluable cultural and entertainment resource and should be utilized more by performing arts groups and event promoters.”

Annual membership in the WWAC is only $30 and supports the national organization. Local events are supported solely by the organizers and proceeds from events go into their operation.

The 2007 Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase and Ohio WWAC convention is July 27-29. Registration is open to the public. For more information on the WWAC or to register for events, call (937) 902-4857 or go online to www.ohiowesternarts.org
